Friday, February 11, 2011: Bar Karma

This show is for everyone who ever watched TV thinking that they knew exactly how to make the program better. If you have a plot for an episode, a story one of the characters should tell, or even an idea for the graffiti that should be on the restroom walls you can submit your idea to the show's web site where it could very easily be voted on by others. It may be a gimmick, but Bar Karma is one of the most totally open and crowd sourced programs to have ever made it to cable. Because of this, watching tonight's premiere episode is not about deciding if the show is any good and instead seeing just how much of the crowd's ideas the Bar Karma producers actually used in a meaningful way.

The show itself doesn't actually look half bad, and in the tradition of TV about characters who can solve everyone else's problems but their own, Bar Karma fits in quite nicely. The lead character, Doug, wins the deed to a bar located "at the edge of the universe, behind time and before space" and now must help someone in the middle of an existential crisis every happy hour. It's a tall order, but he is helped by the bar's employees, a cute waitress and the mystical bartender played by William Sanderson (Deadwood). And while the plot seems sort of like a Quantum Leap knockoff, there is always the bar itself which sounds like a slightly more cramped TARDIS that keeps getting unexpected visitors.

If you were part of this project from the beginning you can check out tonight's episode with a sense of pride. If maybe you are just now hearing about it, about half the season has yet to be shot so you might still have a chance to chime into the creation process. The first episode is on tonight at 10 on Current TV
