Wednesday, March 23, 2011: Top Chef

Tonight, we draw one week closer to the Top Chef All-Stars finale (which isn't until next week, because they're trying to kill us), and I think we can all agree that it's a shocking and bewildering experience that we are watching a final three that includes Mike Isabella and Antonia. Of all the starting contestants, I counted Mike out probably the most, with the exception of, like, Stephen Asprinio, who isn't even really a chef.

So here we are. No Angelo. No Marcel. No Jenn. No Dale. It's very weird. I think it's fairly obvious that Richard is going to win this, despite his tendency to psych himself out (and the fact that he's become pretty damn unpleasant this season), and that's probably fair. The man's a genius, and he should have won his season. Not that I won't be secretly hoping for a dramatic Antonia upset next week, however.

Top Chef airs on Bravo tonight at 10 PM, opposite Off the Map (ABC), Justified (FX) and The Real World (MTV).

Antonia has been struggling a little in the finals but she performed consistently better than either of the guys throughout the season.

I am also surprised that Mike Isabella has made it that far; he has either charmed the judges which is unlikely as he is not a lovable character or the show needs its villain for this season which is more likely the reason. Richard is definitely a top chef, but he is so consumed by his desire to win that it is painful to watch him cook and that may be the reason why he has not been the kind of person he had been during his season. Antonia is a great chef and it is too bad that once again a female voice will be missing. Since two men would be vying for the top chef title, I wish it would have been Chef Richard against Asian Chef Dale whom Anthony Bourdain himself said was the most creative (the fish challenge); unfortunately or fortunately, Dale admitted that he had "reformed" and had become a better person and that was probably why he was ousted out; not enough drama and cutthroat competition.

In the end, hopefully Richard will win the Top Chef title. But who knows? This is television and villains often win.
