Coal follows the salt-of-the-earth miners working in a vertical mine in Appalachia. Obviously, it's a hard job, with plenty of things that could go wrong, so there are likely to be plenty of dramatic points ready to be cut away from for a commercial break. However, the show's main appeal seems to go against Spike's nut-shot/CSI attitude to programing, with a deep focus on these men's family lives and their desire to give their children something better than a life at risk of black lung. This may be the same formula as every other show in this genre, but it for some reason this show feels like it has the potential to be fresh.
