Sunday, April 3, 2011: The Borgias

Staying away from the medieval-like stories all over the other premium cable channels these days, Showtime is looking to the time right after that, when the plagues were less black, the New World has just been discovered, and the pope had concubines. What the channel has not stayed away from in making The Borgias is the same kind of sexy, violent historical drama that made The Tudors so much of a guilty pleasure.

However, unlike Henry VIII, Rodrigo Borgia is actually a clever criminal whose political influence comes more from his lust for power than from a lust for maidens. Not that one is necessarily better than the other. But don't worry about a lack of carnality on this show. The reason the Borgia name is less well-known than other powerful families of the time, like the Medicis, comes from the family's not-so-textbook-friendly renown for not just arsenic poisoning, but rape and incest.

Follow the corruption tonight at 9 PM on Showtime.

Are the Borgias "less known" than the Medicis? Lucrezia Borgia has to be one of the most infamous and written-about women of the age.
