Tuesday, July 12, 2011: Chopped

After eight seasons, it's still going strong and for good reason: Chopped is a solid, summer fun cooking show. It's got the best elements of older cooking shows like Iron Chef America (mystery ingredients and a short time limit) combined with an always-fresh formula of new contestants and new judges every episode. Also, host Ted Allen adds knowledge and (we're pretty sure unintentional) humor to the show.

It goes like this: every week, four up-and-coming chefs have to turn a selection of everyday ingredients into their own distinguished three-course meal. The chefs first receive a basket of mystery ingredients and have 30 minutes to turn those into an appetizer. Their appetizer is then judged by the panel and one contestant is eliminated. The remaining chefs go through the same process for the main course and the desert course, with eliminations after each one until, naturally, one is left the winner. That last chef standing receives $10,000.

Tonight, four British chefs are the competitors, and the mystery ingredients include "an American staple, a Japanese snack...and a distinctly British biscuit." So we'll see how they prepare foods from different cultures and find out -- to use a British phrase (and a pun!) -- who gets the chop.

Chopped airs tonight at 10 PM on The Food Network.
