Monday, August 1, 2011: Shark Week

I can't not use all caps here. I'm sorry. But IT'S SHARK WEEK, you guys. Containing my excitement is not a possibility. It's my favorite week of the year, the only TV event that both terrifies and delights, puts its audience underwater with the most frightening creatures of the ocean and turns up the gore and the building, nerve-racking music -- it's like Jaws, but real. YES PLEASE.

If you don't understand the Shark Week phenomenon -- and if you've never watched Shark Week before -- I hope you have a good excuse, I really do. But here's how it goes: for a week, Discovery Channel plays shows focused only on sharks. During the day, those episodes are repeats from previous Shark Weeks (all still amazing), and then new programs premiere every night at 9. Titles of some of this year's shark-themed shows? "Killer Sharks," "How Sharks Hunt," and best of all, "Jaws Comes Home." Basically, if I could sit in front of my TV this week watching Discovery Channel all day and scaring the bejesus out of myself (and okay, getting kind of educated, too), I would. Bonus: this year it's hosted by the always lovable Andy Samberg.

Really, there's never been a Shark Week that's disappointed. It's the best week to watch TV if you don't usually -- and if you do, there's no way you're not a fan of Shark Week already.

Two new episodes of Shark Week premiere tonight on Discovery Channel starting at 9, titled "Rogue Sharks" and "Summer of the Shark." Shark Week continues through Friday, August 5th.

Watch Andy Samberg talk about his role as Chief Shark Officer in this video.
