What does Fox's new show Terra Nova have in common with Blade Runner, Jurassic Park and Avatar? Everything, it seems.
The show, from executive producer Steven Spielberg, is focuses on the Shannon family in the dystopian future of 2149. The world is overpopulated, forcing a two-child policy for families; plant and animal life is virtually extinct; and the world is physically dark, with buildings covered in soot. Scientists, however, have discovered a "fracture in time," allowing highly selective expeditions to be sent 85 million years in the past to Terra Nova -- a new civilization to save an old one.
In the pilot, cop and father Jim Shannon (Jason O'Mara) is put in jail for two years after resisting arrest when others find out he has three children, rather than two. His wife, trauma surgeon Elisabeth (Shelly Conn), and two of their kids are selected for the "10th Pilgrimage." Terra Nova isn't all it's cracked up to be, however -- not only are there dinosaurs roaming outside the gated community (so that's why Spielberg is part of this project), but the Sixers, a renegade group that came with the 6th Pilgrimage, are trying to take down Terra Nova.
Terra Nova premieres tonight at 8 p.m. on Fox.
