Unlike the book of fairy tales the Brothers Grimm collected in 19th century Germany, Grimm is set in modern-day Portland, Oregon. The show focuses on homicide detective Nick Burckhardt, who discovers he's descended from a line of criminal profilers called Grimms that keep everyone safe from the mythological creatures present in those old stories. Although the creatures appear to be normal people, Grimms like Nick can see how grotesque they really are. Like every other humdrum police procedural, each episode features a crime that is solved by the end of the episode -- only here they've got a fantastical element. (You probably shouldn't let the kids watch these fairy tales, though.)

Grimm premieres tonight at 9 on NBC.
