The second installment of American Masters' two-part look back at the life and work of iconic New York filmmaker Woody Allen picks up in the early '80s, well after all those "early, funny" movies that made him a cinematic force to be reckoned with in the '70s. Part 1, which aired last night on PBS, followed Woody (née Allen Stewart Konigsberg) from his early days writing for TV comics like Sid Caesar to the making of such comedy classics as Love and Death and Annie Hall to his transition into drama with films like Interiors and Stardust Memories.
This chapter covers his post-Stardust output, from such highs as Hannah and Her Sisters and Husbands & Wives to lows like September and Shadows and Fog. (It'll be interesting to see how extensively director Robert Weide addresses Allen's messy break-up with Mia Farrow in the early '90s, which clearly had an impact on his work in the first half of that decade.) In addition to Allen himself, the film includes interviews with such collaborators and co-stars as Penelope Cruz, John Cusack, Mira Sorvino, cinematographer Gordon Willis and his sister/producer Letty Aronson. Weide also got exclusive access to the set of Allen's underrated 2010 film, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger to film the legend at work.
Woody Allen: A Documentary concludes tonight at 9pm on your local PBS station.
