Sunday, February 12, 2012: Full Metal Jousting

We're big fans of Top Shot and this new History Channel show is the perfect companion to that, as it's remarkably similar, but with an extreme twist. Instead of shooting off firearms (which is something that an ordinary person could prepare for), the competitors don armor, hop on horses and try to knock the crap out of each other. In other words, its pretty much great.

While host Shane Adams doesn't have the adorable dimples of Top Shot's Colby Donaldson, he has an unbridled (pun intended) enthusiasm for reviving this sporting pastime that is remarkably infectious. While a few of the jousters have experience with theatrical jousting (a.k.a. working at your local renaissance faire or Medieval Times), that's not nearly the same thing. Most are military guys (like on Top Shot) or bull riders or the like. But even the guys with jousting experience aren't prepared for the high degree of difficulty, as the first episode shows them getting hit by baseball bats (while wearing armor) and battering rams.

Those slow-mo shots I like, plus pretty horses and guys hitting each other with sharp sticks? Yeah, this show is definitely worth watching.
