Thursday, April 5, 2012: Being Elmo

As the parent of two young kids, I'm well-acquainted with Elmo, the furry little Sesame Street Muppet that children adore and adults tolerate. But even the most dedicated Elmo haters may come around after watching this warm-hearted profile of the man behind the Muppet, Kevin Clash, which is airing tonight as part of PBS's Independent Lens documentary series.

Directed by Constance Marks, Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey follows Clash from his early days as a precocious youngster fashioning makeshift puppets out of the fur lining of his father's trench coat to working alongside Jim Henson himself on his 1986 film, Labyrinth (Clash performed one of those freaky fire demons that harassed poor Jennifer Connelly). But his breakthrough moment came when he was handed the Elmo puppet by the character's original puppeteer and told to figure out a way to make him work. And with that, a red felt superstar and merchandising bonanza was born. Filled with terrific archival clips (the early appearances of Elmo on Sesame Street with his pre-Clash voice are a real trip) and interviews with Clash and other influential puppeteers, Being Elmo is both a lively portrait of an artist devoted to his craft and a source of inspiration for budding puppeteers out there.

Being Elmo airs tonight on PBS at 10 PM opposite new episodes of The Mentalist, Awake and Scandal.
