Friday, February 12, 2010: XXI Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony

It's Olympics time! The 17-day extravaganza kicks off tonight and I'm really excited about it. Seriously. No one is paying me to say that. I've been an Olympics junkie since I was a little kid and I always watch far, far too many hours of it. (Check out my endless blogs about the summer Olympics from 2008). And while the Winter Games don't offer quite as many flashy events as the summer games (there's no trampolining here, folks), there are a bevy of sports that I just find myself devoting hours on end to. Like curling. It's a very complicated sport with many rules that seems to take approximately three hours to play (not exaggerating) and is kind of like ice bowling/bocce ball with brooms. Yes, a sport that involves cleaning. Can I get a medal in Swiffering? 'Cause I'm super agile at getting my Swiffer in cramped quarter.

Anyway, tonight is the big fancy opening ceremony. Normally, I love this crazy Cirque du Soleil nonsense and all of the weird cultural things foisted upon us by the home country (in this case Canada), but frankly, the massive spectacle of the Beijing ceremonies have ruined me for anything else. Unless Vancouver has the entire Royal Canadian Mounted Police hiding under little boxes and moving in synchronized waves, it just won't even come close to impressing me.

Of course, that doesn't mean that I'm not going to be watching every single minute of it, staring at the parade of athletes and brushing up on my geography at the same time. It also doesn't mean that I won't get goosebumps as they light the torch. I will; there's no doubting that. The odd traditions are part of the fun, after all. Otherwise, it's just like watching sports and really, who wants that?

My series of sleepless nights (dudes, they only air curling at like 6AM) begins tonight at 8 PM on NBC.
