Wednesday, January 26, 2011: Face Off

The more I think about this show, the more brilliant I think it is. There are competitive reality series for fashion designing (Project Runway, The Fashion Show), hairstyling (Shear Genius) and even studio art (Work of Art), so why not a series that combines elements of all three? Professional make-up artists creating movie monsters to win cash and prizes? It's genius. In fact, now I wonder why there isn't a series for regular make-up artists, although a good smoky eye is no match for a subterranean mutant.

With categories that include camouflage, aging and horror villains, the show looks like a making-of doc for a Syfy original movie, and should be as fun to watch; the full-body painting episode alone looks like it will have the requisite amount of near-nudity for this type of series. I'm a little disappointed they didn't get a high-profile makeup artist like Rick Baker on the show, but one of the judges is a nine-time Oscar nominee and three-time winner (she did Edward Scissorhands!), and between the three of them they've worked on Star Trek, Buffy, The X-Files and Underworld (actually, one of them even directed the last Underworld). Even the hostess, McKenzie Westmore, is the daughter of a former Trek make-up artist. It would have been nice to get someone famous for actually wearing makeup, and not just a soap star and occasional Trek bit player, but the family history is a nice touch. We'll see if it comes up in between all of the fights and meltdowns.

Face Off premieres tonight at 10/9C on Syfy, opposite new eps of Off the Map, Blue Bloods, Restaurant Impossible, I Used to Be Fat, Toddlers and Tiaras, Hot in Cleveland and Retired at 35.
