For a while, I thought I was the only person watching this show, and that maybe it existed in my brain and not on actual TV where other people could see it. It's got this combination of being weirdly low-budget, nonsensical, wholesome and harmless that it just seemed too good to be true. And then it got nominated for an Emmy.
Well, a Daytime Emmy. And technically, host Todd Newton and not the show itself got the nod, but still, that is serious recognition for a Double Dare-style kid-friendly game show doubling for a Hasbro commercial that pits two family of four against one another to compete in battles based on popular board games. There's something delightfully charming about Family Game Night that makes it kind of amazing, on the same level as The Singing Bee, but with honest-to-goodness heart. And this season promises more classic games and the use of green screen technology, so things are only looking up from here.
Season 2 of Family Game Night debuts tonight with two new episodes starting at 7 PM on The Hub.
