Wednesday, January 2, 2013: Nashville

Have you been avoiding watching ABC's country music series Nashville, in which Connie Britton and Hayden Planetarium Panettiere get their cat-fight on in between twangy music numbers? Judging by the show's Nielsen numbers, you're not the only one. But here's some good news for the New Year! Now you can catch up on all the goings-on in the show's fictionalized version of Nashville courtesy of this hour-long clip show, "The Whole Story." Although, frankly, the first half of the season could just as easily be summarized in 30 minutes. The show really needs to pick up the pace, people.

Even if Nashville is a bit on the pokey side, there's stuff here to recommend here, starting with the opportunity to watch Britton on network TV on a weekly basis again. (We still miss you, Tami Taylor.) And the numerous musical numbers really are pretty good, thanks no doubt to the involvement of veteran country artist, T-Bone Burnett. On the dramatic side, however, the show has struggled to find its voice, with creator Callie Khouri often losing track of her large cast. (Our advice? Ditch the so-boring-nobody-cares storyline about the mayoral race and keep the focus on the music industry.) Bringing Britton and Panettiere together again after an excessive amount of time apart is a strong step in the right direction. Here's hoping the second half of the season hits stronger notes.

The Nashville clip show airs tonight at 10 PM on ABC, opposite a new episode of the inexplicably popular Chicago Fire on NBC. Earlier in the evening, you can also watch new episodes of Whitney and Guys With Kids at 8 and 8:30 PM on the Peacock Network. Just be sure to have some leftover New Year's Eve booze handy.
