O Canada. The land of Wayne Gretzky, poutine, and snooty almost-French people is exporting yet another delight to American shores: Donut Showdown, a show that sounds made up but in fact was actually pitched, financed and filmed, and will be airing tonight on The Cooking Channel. This gives me hope that my ultimate fantasy reality show Intelligent Dog or Stupid Human? still has a chance of getting picked up next pilot season.
The American version of this program, which already airs on Food Network Canada, looks to be following in the footsteps of Cupcake Wars and Chopped. Each episode, three teams of professional doughnut makers will compete in two rounds, until only one team remains to claim a $10,000 prize and the title of King Heart Attack, Ruler of State Fairs and Other Festivals Honoring the Deep Fryer.
Like all of the other 400 cooking competition shows currently airing, Donut Wars will include a round based on a mystery ingredient. This begs the question, just how many meat, condiment, and/or asparagus doughnuts are we going to see on this show? Because I still have nightmares about the Iron Chef tripe episode.
Donut Wars will premiere at 10 PM on The Cooking Channel. I guess tonight's big for food shows, because BBQ Crawl: Texas Competition will air its first episode at 8 PM on The Travel Channel and, also at 8 PM, The Cooking Channel will premiere the fifth season of Kelsey's Essentials: Fiery Foods.
