Monday, December 9, 2013: Six By Sondheim

Good luck getting "Send in the Clowns" out of your head. Not that you'll want to, obviously.

As the title implies, the HBO documentary Six By Sondheim is a portrait of beloved composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim and the six decades that he's been creating Broadway and Off-Broadway shows that have thrilled generations of theater freaks and geeks. Directed by regular Sondheim collaborator James Lapine (who directed the original productions of such shows as Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods), this slender 90-minute retrospective is told through a series of new and archival interviews with the central subject, as well as vintage footage of actors and singers performing his tunes. Additionally, six songs -- including "Opening Doors," "Sunday" and, yes, "Send in the Clowns" -- are dusted off for new performances by such actors as Audra McDonald, Jarvis Cocker and the trio of Jeremy Jordan, Darren Criss and America Ferrera. Those looking for more details about shows like Assassins, Pacific Overture and Into the Woods (which is currently being adapted to the big screen) may be slightly disappointed by their absence from Six, which sticks to company like Follies, Merrily We Roll Along and... well, Follies. But who are we kidding? This documentary had us at "Something's Coming."

Six by Sondheim premieres tonight at 9pm on HBO, opposite the second and final night of A&E/History/Lifetime's Bonnie & Clyde miniseries event and a new episode of Fox's spooktacular Sleepy Hollow. At 10 PM count down to the end of CBS's Hostages (it can't come soon enough) or watch MTV exploit sperm donors now with Generation Cryo.
