Are you happy now, all you Barney/Robin shippers? Robin and Barney have declared themselves boyfriend and girlfriend, which automatically makes their relationship twice as interesting as Ted's never-ending search for a mother. (Although the upcoming 100th episode may liven things up in that arena.) So, in an attempt to make Ted relevant again, the writers have him teaching Barney how to date his ex-girlfriend. Which seems like asking asking the captain of the Titanic how to navigate the North Atlantic, but whatever.

It's finally here -- the 100th episode of How I Met Your Mother! Of course, it feels like more than 100 episodes that we've been watching Ted strike out with women, but it's been a good ride. Supposedly, tonight's episode takes him one step closer to meeting the mother, but we've been hearing that for a while, and we'll believe that when we see it. Special guest star Rachel Bilson may or may not be the child-birthing lady in question, or at least that's what they want us to believe, but we're sure it'll just be another red herring. We're more interested in the B-plot -- or is Ted's romantic journey now the B-plot? Let's say that it is. Less pressure on it to deliver week after week. (Although let's be clear on this -- Ted is still awesome.)

Note: CBS decided to play it safe to air a rerun instead of this fab new episode just in case President Obama's speech runs long. Damn it. So now we'll have to wait a whole week for Barney's mom to visit. However, Christine Baranski is dropping in as Leonard's mom on chuckle-worthy Big Bang Theory which is airing just for tonight in a post-Two and a Half Men timeslot at 9:30 PM. Give it a whirl. We love those nerds almost as much as Barney. Almost.
Oh, How I Met Your Mother -- how unnecessary are your guest stars. You have an amazing cast of characters already: Neil Patrick Harris' womanizing Barney, Alyson Hannigan's aggressive Lily, Josh Radnor's wishy-washy Ted, Jason Segel's lovable Marshall, Cobie Smulders'... very Canadian Robin. Whenever you have a guest star on, be it Britney Spears, Regis Philbin or whomever, it always takes away from the existing dynamic that exists between these five young, urban professionals. That being said, tonight's guest appearance by Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under) is forgivable, because she plays Barney's mother, Loretta. Any episode that introduces members of Barney's family can be forgiven a guest star or two -- after all, we forgave the appearance of Wayne Brady as Barney's brother and Bob Barker as Barney's supposed illegitimate father. And what are we, hypocrites?
