Get ready to get off your ass and march down to the video store again (at least those of you with Blu-ray players (to which I whine: lucky!)). Cnet blog Crave has reported that Netflix will begin charging a premium on accounts that rent Blu-ray movies. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings reportedly said on a conference call that "consumers are used to paying more for high-definition." Hastings clearly hasn't met my boyfriend, who took a fine-toothed comb to the cable bill when they added a couple of HD channels to the line-up, muttering "So help me, we'd better not be paying for these..."
Netflix had previously been offering up Blu-ray and HD DVD disks for the same price as regular ones until the company stopped offering the now-extinct HD DVD disks in February. Now that the studios have put an end to the Video! No, Beta! Argument for the Netflix Age, opting for the Blu-ray format, it remains to be seen if the extra money Netflix will charge will put a damper on Blu-ray player sales going forward. Given that some movie-makers are creating special-for-the-Blu-ray-set content (according to a Comic Book Resources report, when asked at the New York Comic Con last week about extra features for the DVD release of this summer's new The X-Files movie, co-writer Frank Spotnitz replied that the "Blu-ray DVD will be really cool"), that may be a foregone conclusion and a sound financial decision from Netflix.
Whether or not certain X-Philes will be able to convince their boyfriends to go in on shelling out extra cash for both the Blu-ray player and the Netflix surcharge in the near-future however, remains to be seen. After all, Blockbuster sells all the movie-watching concessions you could ask for right there while you're in line and so far, they're not asking for extra cash.
