Variety reports that Mel Gibson is set to star in Edge of Darkness, a feature film adaptation of a 1985 BBC miniseries. Also noted is that this will be Gibson's first starring role since 2002's Signs and We Were Soldiers. Perhaps Gibson's been too busy writing and directing his own films, or taking long drives to give much thought to headlining a film until now.
In Darkness, Gibson will portray a "straitlaced police investigator" looking into the sudden death of his daughter. Although he's played a cop in many movies in the past, this will be the first time he's played one since his July 2006 arrest. Back then, the media had a field day playing with his "Mad" Max moniker and wondering if the title of Apocalypto might actually be forecasting Gibson's career. But maybe now he'll have a little different insight into police business having now been on the other side of the badge in real life. The Lethal Weapon movies were popcorn-munching fun (well, for the most part), but Gibson could bring a new dose of verisimilitude to his latest role.
Martin Campbell, who directed the original miniseries, will also direct the movie version. Campbell seems to be experiencing a bit of a career rebirth himself, coming off 2006's Casino Royale after a kind of shaky few years where the sadly average Legend of Zorro looked like the highlight of his resumé.
William Monahan, who won an Oscar for The Departed, wrote the script, and Graham King is producing, with King financing the project himself. At this time, production is set to begin this August.
