The fossil record is littered with examples of what a long, slow process evolution usually is: Around forty million years ago, wolf-sized whales were scampering around Pakistan on their furry little legs. For the reptilian Sleestaks from Land of the Lost, however, it took just over thirty years to evolve from guys in truly horrible rubber suits to...guys in slightly less horrible rubber suits.
The equally loved and derided television series from the '70s is getting an update, and a picture of the villainous Sleestaks has debuted in USA Today. But the makeover is far from extreme: The new Sleestak costumes are sleeker, and not as bright green, but are faithful enough to the old ones that seeing the movie will likely cause any of the original show's reptile-suited actors to suffer from claustrophobic flashbacks. Director Brad Silberling says the decision to keep the cheese factor of the green rubber suits rather than rendering the creatures in CG was an intentional one. According to Silberling, there's a "sense of humor...that can only come from an actor trying to negotiate the suit." I think I agree, but I don't know if the actors would see eye to bulging lizard eye with him after a long day of smelling their own sweat under layers of latex.
Also updated for its 2009 debut is the human cast of characters, which ditches the kids of the original in favor of grown-ups. Will Ferrell (who seems to have single-handedly cornered the movie market on parodies and homages) stars as Rick Marshall, a park ranger who finds himself a bit out of his element, with Anna Friel and Danny R. McBride co-starring as his companions yearning for the modern convenience of a quick call to OnStar. ["Ferrell's clearly a Land of the Lost fan, he played Marshall Willenholly (Marshall's LotL offspring are Will and Holly) in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" -- Angel]
