Pond. James Pond

Sometimes, life imitates art instead of the other way around.

Someone drove James Bond's Aston Martin into Lake Garda in Italy on Sunday, and all media outlets have been talking about is the car. I had to read all the way to the end of the fourth paragraph of this news item, for instance, before I saw, "...but the driver was able to swim ashore." Thank goodness, right? I mean, sure he destroyed a $250,000 car, at least he's okay.

Most media outlets have been saying he's a stunt man, so maybe that's why no one wonders if he's okay: They assume a stunt guy knows how to get out of a car in a lake. But of course.

The best part of the story, though, is that this didn't happen on the set during any sort of stunt. This happened early in the morning, on the driver's way to the set. This led me to wonder two things: 1. Why in the world would a stunt driver get to take Bond's car home for the night? And 2. If you're a stunt driver, must you drive crazy even when you're not at work?

Digging a little deeper, though, I discovered that the man driving the car was not a stuntman. British news outlets revealed the driver's identity as 29-year-old Fraser Dunn, an engineer at Aston Martin's headquarters. His delivering the car to the set suddenly makes a lot more sense, doesn't it?

Sounds like the film crew is without Bond's car now, because it was the only one available for the film. But maybe Aston Martin can come up with a replacement, since it wasn't the movie people who ruined this one, but one of their own.

The Warwick Courier got the best line of the day, with: "...miraculously Mr. Dunn suffered only minor injuries and swam to shore. Whether there was a pithy comment following his death-defying escape is not known." Too bad film crews weren't there to capture this real-life James Bond moment.

I had sosean passes to most of these shows as well, but definitely not on any TiVo I currently own. I've long since upgraded and lost any history going that far back. Stand Alone Series 1 -> Series 2 DirecTV -> Series 2 HD DirecTV -> Stand Alone TiVo HD.
