You can't judge a book by its cover, and you can't judge a kid by his Pappy either. I just read in the Hollywood Reporter that Tom Cruise's son has a small role in Will Smith's upcoming movie, which wasn't odd until I read that Cruise's son was playing a younger version of the Fresh Prince. My mind immediately flashed to two images:
1. Will Smith's son Jaden, who was very good alongside his Pops in The Pursuit of Happyness, asking Jada Pinkett "why couldn't I play Dad? Is he mad I upstaged him in that last movie?"
2. Robert Downey Jr., armed with a big vat of makeup and a cigarette, telling Cruise's son the finer points of blackface makeup. "You gotta make sure you're the same color as Will, so we're going to mix Browns number 5, 42 and 9."
This is one of those stories where the picture is worth a thousand words. Cruise's son, Connor, is adopted and, judging by his photo, doesn't need any makeup or CGI to play his role. Shame on me for making an improper racial assumption, but if you read somewhere that my kid was playing John Lennon as a youngster, you'd scratch your head too if you thought he came from my loins and my neighborhood.
Speaking of John Lennon, Ben Stein is being sued by Yoko Ono for using Lennon's 1971 classic, "Imagine," without permission. Reuters states that Stein featured the song in his recent intelligent design defense documentary Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. If Ono has her way, there will be no "Imagine" allowed in No Intelligence Allowed. Stein, who once wrote speeches for Nixon, looked for Ferris Bueller, and played straight man to Jimmy Kimmel on a game show, should have known something about using songs without paying for them. Look at what happened to those teenagers swapping songs on the Intenet. They got the chair. Not having seen the doc, I don't know the context of the song's use. However, I don't think the filmmakers listened to its lyrics. In a film supporting a religious agenda, it doesn't pay to use a song that tells us to imagine religion doesn't exist.
