File under "Cool TV Shows You Never Thought Would Be Made Into a Movie, But Kinda Always Hoped They Would": Fraggle Rock. That's right, the '80s show from the late, great Head Muppet himself, Jim Henson, is going to be made into a feature film. The musical will take the "core characters" from the show "outside of their home in Fraggle Rock, where they interact with humans, which they think are aliens." It's a lesson in cultural perspective, with puppets!
If you're between the ages of, oh, say, 25 and 40 (give or take a few years on either side), you may be experiencing some mixed emotions. If your initial reaction of "Awright!" has been tempered by a dose of wondering "What now?", don't worry. This is normal. You've seen other childhood favorites updated, reimagined and altogether changed to fit the expectations of a modern viewing public. Back then, you were a carefree Fraggle. Now, you're a practical-minded Doozer. It's expected to be a little wary as an adult, even as you begin eyeing your cubicle walls for signs of a hole leading to Fraggle Rock.
Cory Edwards is writing and directing the movie. He also wrote and directed Hoodwinked!, itself an updated version of the Little Red Riding Hood story, dealing with some of the more practical aspects of fairytales, such as breaking and entering, theft and unlicensed weapons possession. With luck (and steering clear of the common trap of substituting big-name movie stars and/or special effects for heart), this could actually be a good match for the allegorical Fraggle Rock, which had more in common with the "real world" than many of its young viewers (including me) realized at the time.
