Harpo Scoops Them All

Heads are rolling down at TMZ headquarters this morning, I can almost guarantee you. Somehow, some way, at some point in history, Tom Cruise dated Cher and so far as I know, none of the tabloids broke the story. It took Tom Cruise's second stint of sofa sitting on Oprah's couch for that gem of news to pop out of the rough, and I end up reading about it on CNN of all places. All of me, from the responsible part that thinks CNN would do better using its resources sussing out facts and stories on the economy or the war, to the slightly louder part of my personality that is a proud check-out line reader of gossip rag filth, must say: That's not right.

Now, all Hmm, Tom Cruise Had A Thing For Cher Huh? obviousness aside, Cher was apparently "crazy about him." The relationship, on which there are no exact dates given (way to go CNN! Star would have given me a two-page timeline), seems to have taken place after Risky Business and before The Color of Money, putting Cruise in his early 20's at the time and Cher at around 40.

In the episode, which won't air until May 8, upon learning that the two dated, Oprah asked Cher, "So how much of a date was that?" To which Cher replied, "Oh, that was a long date. Really. I lived in his apartment." Had it not been shot on location at Cruise's Telluride home, I would guess that would have been the point where the studio audience would have checked under their seat for their free bottle of brain bleach.

Cher described Cruise at the time as being "shy", "wonderful", and broke. So, in other words, not yet a Scientologist. It should be noted that in the article, CNN also glossed right over the fact that Tina Turner also made an appearance in the Cruise-themed Oprah episode, which In Touch, The Enquirer, et al, would never have done. So, come May 9, keep your eyes peeled on the check-out line tabs for details. Then again, you may want to check CNN, too.
