When news started trickling out about Robert Rodriguez's Shorts project, some people speculated it might be a collection of short films, not unlike Four Rooms, for which Rodriguez directed one segment.
A script review a few months later dispelled that notion. The movie is made up of four short segments, but it's a children's movie in the vein of Rodriguez's Spy Kids trilogy. The story apparently features a giant, menacing booger and a parent's admonishment to his child regarding using one's fingers to dig poop out of one's butt, among other such cinematic delights. It will likely have you wishing you hadn't opted for Milk Duds at the concessions stand. Your kids will probably love it and be inspired to make endless poop and booger jokes at the dinner table, and you will make a mental note to boycott the next two Sin City movies. Or to send your youngest's dirty diapers to Rodriguez's office.
Today, Variety also reveals that "an 11-year-old boy is hit in the head with a rainbow-colored rock" that grants wishes. Fast-forward to the week after this movie comes out, and Katie Couric is reporting on the newest craze to endanger children's noggins since the choking game: Voluntary Skull Bashing. Pet Rocks will be banned from the bedrooms of tiny tots everywhere.
For the over-thirteen set, the good news is that at least the cast of grownups looks pretty promising. James Spader and Jon Cryer have joined the cast, proving that it is in fact possible to have a successful movie career in the '80s, drop off the "A-list" for a while, have a successful TV show in the 2000s, and make it back to the big screen. That is, provided neither of them is playing the giant booger monster or the hallucinogenic rock. Other stars who've signed on to engage in the impending snot battle include William H. Macy and Leslie Mann. Robert Rodriguez will write, direct, and produce under his Troublemaker Studios banner.
