I Don't Want No Minute Man

The Watchmen movie is quickly becoming one of the most buzzed-about films of 2009, what with the amazing in-costume photographs that have been released, as well as its potential to save the DVD industry, apparently. But it's little nuggets like this that really get fans excited, even though someone with less informed eyes might look on this and wonder what the hell they're spending their money on. Bill Murray's line from Ghostbusters 2 springs to mind: "Boys, boys -- you're scaring the straights!"

To celebrate Memorial Day, Watchmen director Zack Snyder released this picture of the Minutemen, the 1940s superteam that would eventually hand over superheroing duties to the current crop of heroes seen in the movie. While all appear in flashbacks in the comic (and presumably the film), not all are still living. From left to right, Silhouette was shot, Mothman is an alcoholic, Dollar Bill was shot, the original Nite Owl is retired, Captain Metropolis was decapitated, the original Silk Spectre is retired, Hooded Justice is missing and presumed dead and the kneeling Comedian's murder at the beginning of the movie prompts much of the film's action. In case you couldn't tell, the Comedian is Daddy Winchester from Supernatural. Everyone else was apparently plucked from the casting pool of Stargate: Atlantis.

While the 1940s were a more colorful time, and they couldn't do as much with vinyl and body armor as we can today, the "costume party" look of this photo has some on the Internet concerned. I think it's an accurate depiction of 1940s superhero outfits, but I'm curious to see how they'll look on screen, as well as in the straight-to-DVD film based on Nite Owl's book, Under the Hood. Also, whenever I look at it, I can't help thinking it's a sepia-toned deleted scene from O Brother Where Art Thou?, and that's John Goodman under that black Klansman hood. ...I think I've seen that movie too many times.

Posted on Just fiesihnd Domu last week and I agree. It would make a good movie. I'd rather have that than trying to do an Akira adaptation right now.
