Mostly positive reviews and an avalanche of buzz helped propel Iron Man to a huge opening weekend, raking in $100.8 million in 4,105 theaters. If you include its Thursday night take, it's already made more than $104 million.
Entertainment Weekly says that the three-day haul is the 10th best of all time, putting the film in some prestigious company. And it's the second-best non-sequel debut ever, after Spider-Man.
Another interesting fact from the EW article: No previous Robert Downey Jr. film has made $100 million during its entire run, let alone in one weekend.
Even though everyone and their brother went to see Iron Man this weekend, plenty of folks -- mostly women -- managed to make it to the No. 2 movie, Made of Honor. The Patrick Dempsey vehicle managed a none-too-shabby $15.5 million (especially given the poor reviews) on 2,729 screens.
Made of Honor's success, along with Baby Mama holding strong at No. 3 ($10.3 million on 2,548 screens for a two-week total of $32.3 million), continued to show off women moviegoers' newfound box office clout.
The bad news from Hollywood Reporter: Even with the big successes, the weekend is still down compared to the same weekend last year, when Spider-Man 3 kicked off the summer with its own $151 million opening weekend.
Rounding out the weekend's top 10: 4. Forgetting Sarah Marshall, $6.1 million; 5. Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, $6.0 million; 6. The Forbidden Kingdom, $4.2 million; 7. Nim's Island, $2.8 million; 8. Prom Night, $2.5 million; 9. 21, $2.1 million; 10. 88 Minutes, $1.6 million.
In its eighth week, Horton Hears a Who finally dropped out of the top 10, landing at No. 11, with its eight-week total nearing $150 million.
