Karma Chameleon, or Shut Up, Sharon!

It used to irritate me to no end when I'd hear people saying that Hollywood celebrities should keep their political and world views to themselves. After all, they're regular people, too...under all the makeup, lighting, Botox, sex tapes, assistants and money. They have an opinion and the right to share it with whomever they choose. I would further lecture those who wish to silence the celebs, but Sharon Stone has basically ice-picked my position to death. Ms. Stone somehow managed to recast herself as some kind of Magic 8-Ball, dispensing absurd answers to a question only Mother Nature can explain. Maybe her massive brain fart resulted from an unusual case of too-tight panties cutting off the circulation to her brain? Perhaps that's a bad explanation; we've all seen Basic Instinct.

Here is Stone's quote: "All these earthquakes and stuff happened, and I thought, 'Is that karma?' When you are not nice, bad things happen to you. I'm not happy about how the Chinese are treating the Tibetans, I don't think anyone should be unkind to anyone else. They're not being very nice to the Dalai Lama, who's a good friend of mine."

Through no fault of his own, the Dalai Lama inspires celebrities to say some stupid shit. Richard Gere implored us to send vibes to him during the Oscars, and now Stone is using his country to sing "Karma Chameleon." The structure of her statement supports every argument the naysayers have for silencing celebrity opinion. It's self-centered, questionable, absurd, can be used against her, and worst of all, turns the Dalai Lama into Jeremiah the bullfrog from Three Dog Night's "Joy To The World." Who died and made Catherine Tramell here Mother Nature? It's perfectly fine to have an opinion on Tibet, to be angered by the current situation, but to blame karma is also to tempt it. Using a great tragedy to name drop and push your own agenda is definitely being "unkind to anyone else" and highlights the primary complaint against stars speaking out: They are woefully out of touch with reality. That whirring you hear in the distance is a big karmic boomerang en route to Ms. Stone's house. "When you're not nice, bad things happen to you."

"This actress does not deserve our attention. The best way is to ignore her," says Chinese thesp Liu Wei. American audiences have been doing exactly that for years, so this must be her way of getting our attention. To quote Ozzy Osbourne: "Shut up, Sharon!"
