In an effort to revive both mullets and '80s TV shows in one fell swoop, MacGyver creator Lee David Zlotoff is apparently "working on a big screen version of the resourceful hero" last seen riding happily into the sunset. Or overstaying his welcome at Patty and Selma's place, depending on your take on reality. MacGyver could escape the trickiest situations with makeshift bombs, paper clips, and his trusty (and endlessly equipped) Swiss Army Knife, but can he find his way out of a TV?
Zlotoff teased the possibility last weekend at Maker Faire, an "event that celebrates the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset," much like the show itself. Plans appear to be tentative, with Zlotoff making the comment "in passing," so it's unknown at this time just how far long in the process he is or if there's even a script at this point. I wouldn't bet on Richard Dean Anderson reprising the role that made him a household name, though, and it wasn't mentioned whether Zlotoff intended to recast the part with another, younger actor.
You know how Peter Parker has a "spider-sense" that alerts him to impending dangers? A sort of creepy sense of dread, I guess you'd call it. I have the same thing that alerts me to impending remakes of old TV shows. So at this point, I would like to bring up the ill-fated pilot for Young MacGyver and ask Zlotoff to cast carefully if there are plans to aim this film at the youth market. There's "young" and then there's "Isn't Zac Efron a little inexperienced to be a secret agent?" young. If Zlotoff does get this film made, here's hoping he's just as resourceful and creative as MacGyver would be.
With or without the mullet.
