The Rainforests Are In Pain... And So Is Harrison Ford

So, remember that part in The 40 Year Old Virgin where Steve Carell got his chest waxed and was all "Kelly Clarkson!" and you could tell he was in serious pain and that the waxing was real? CNN does. They're reporting that Harrison Ford is waxing his chest for the environment, and one of their story highlights, I shit you not, is "Similar scene originally appeared in a movie: 2005's The 40-Year-Old Virgin." I'm letting the fact that CNN is wasting its resources on fluffy crap and not reporting the real news slide (this time) because the article is ostensibly about the state of the environment, even if it's mostly about a movie star--there's News and a Message in there somewhere, even if I can't quite find it.

Ford, who sits on the board of Washington-based environmental organization Conservation International, filmed a 30-second PSA TV spot for the group, in which he enters a spa of some sort, waxing (sorry) eloquent about how when rainforests are slashed and burned, tons of carbon are released into the air we breathe--and how that hurts us. He then sits, shirtless, in a chair while a woman applies hot wax to his chest and then rips it off, extolling (after a soft grunt and kind of a dirty look to the waxing lady) that when rainforests are slashed and burned "over there" it hurts us over here. That's pretty much it.

With Indy 4 coming out today and Ford again in the spotlight, the timing is certainly a boon for the organization and its mission, though I think the spot could have been improved with just a quick cut at the end back to Ford (who for the sake of vanity surely had the rest of his chest waxed) getting the last little bit of hair ripped off and yelling "No, it SERIOUSLY hurts!" Had they, I would have felt better about laughing at it. CNN tells me that while Carell's scene in Virgin was "intentionally hilarious," Ford's message is really quite serious. Whether or not Harrison Ford achieved that serious tone he was looking for, you'll have to judge for yourself.
