As mentioned last month in the Moviefile, the new X-Files movie's subtitle is I Want To Believe. But don't be too quick to adopt that subtitle as your personal credo when it comes to how you approach rumors and speculation. In an interview posted at FilmBuffOnLine, X-Files film producer Frank Spotnitz is saying we shouldn't believe anything we read on the internet about the upcoming movie. He even spouts that old gem from the show: "Trust no one." Except, if we take Spotnitz's advice, we'd have to disbelieve what he's saying in this internet interview. So does that mean we should believe what we read on the internet? This is all getting more confusing than some of the franchise's plot lines.
Which is probably one reason why the fans are speculating up a storm. Consider some of the old plots, like bees that were somehow needed to pollinate wind-pollinated corn ("It's mutant corn!" insisted X-Files creator Chris Carter), or that whole thing with the starlight and what really happened to Samantha, or the Messiah-like superbaby... Well, for many, trying to figure out some of the new movie's secrets might be their way of preparing for the worst. Or maybe it's just a matter of indulging in some good old conspiracy theorizing, after such a long wait for more Mulder and Scully.
Either way, Carter and Spotnitz couldn't be happier about keeping the fans guessing. "For our purposes all that speculation is perfect," says Spotnitz. They want to keep the "surprise" unspoiled for viewers, but answers and resolutions may not come even when the movie makes its debut in July. Said Spotnitz when pressed about plot holes and lingering questions about the first film ten years ago: "Frankly, the answers weren't interesting enough to put in the film."
I don't know if I believe that, Frank, but I believe that you believe it.
