Many segments of the retail market are facing financial difficulties these days, and entertainment sales are no exception. After two flat years, 2007 saw the first real decline in DVD sales "since the disc format debuted in 1997." Maybe it's because of the advent of cheap, home-delivered rentals, or maybe people just finally filled up their wobbly DVD racks and ran out of room. Whatever the reason, an article in The New York Times says that Warner Brothers Entertainment recognizes the trouble it's in. But who can they turn to when they're up against a faceless, powerful enemy? Why, superheroes, of course!
Warner Brothers is going to milk the upcoming Watchmen movie for all it's worth -- and then some. That in itself is no surprise, but they're doing it in a pretty interesting way. Warner will be releasing a DVD within days of the movie's release next March, taking full advantage of Watchmen's rich and detailed universe by creating an animated version of a comic book read by one of the characters. The comic-within-a-comic is Tales of the Black Freighter, and was originally intended to be included only as an "extra" feature of the movie DVD, as reported last February in the FilmBuff Newsreel. But why sell one DVD when you can sell two? If that hasn't got you ready to hand Warner Brothers your hard-earned cash, try this: A new report says the Tales disc will also include a "mockumentary" entitled "Under the Hood" that will "flesh out the heroes' backstories."
Looks like Warner Brothers is really pinning its hopes -- and its money -- on this one; Gerard Butler, formerly of giant Spartan pecs, has been hired to voice the main character in the Black Freighter story.
