Casting News: Terminators, Tinker Bells and Tanning Butter

So many movie casts were changed or announced today that we couldn't help but take notice:

Howard in Terminator? It sounds like Bryce Dallas Howard is in talks to replace Charlotte Gainsbourg as Kate Connor, the wife of hero John Connor, in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. My initial, shallow reaction: What's with all the redheads in various Terminator projects? Upon further thought, though, I can't help thinking that when the casting choices are as different as Gainsbourg and Howard (physically, as actors, and in their film choices), it's hard to believe the story they're selling, that this is due to the possible actors' strike creating conflicts for Gainsbourg. Also, isn't it about time we stopped referring to Howard as Ron Howard's daughter or, even more insulting to both Howards, as Opie's kid? I think they've both risen above those pigeonholes by now.

2012's big stars: Danny Glover, Thandie Newton, and Oliver Platt might join the cast of Roland Emmerich's 2012. With John Cusack and Chiwetel Ejiofor already on board, this has the makings of a decent film, which is unexpected from the director who made 10,000 B.C. Glover is expected to play the president, and Newton would play his daughter.

Murphy replaced as Tinker Bell: Despite hyping her voice casting nearly two years ago for their CGI Tinker Bell, Disney apparently has fired Brittany Murphy in the lead voice role, quickly replacing her with Mae Whitman. They're not saying what happened, but a direct-to-DVD movie hasn't generated this much buzz since ... well, one never has that I can think of. Leave it to Brittany Murphy to turn a Tinker Bell DVD release into something to talk about.

Jack & Bobby star needs a tan: Jack & Bobby star Logan Lerman has been cast as a young George Hamilton in My One and Only, a movie about Hamilton's early years, when his mother took her sons across the country to track down their father. He's not playing a future president or anything, but this is another big step for the former TV actor's career. He was seen previously in 3:10 to Yuma opposite big stars Russell Crowe and Christian Bale; here, he'll star opposite Renee Zellweger.

McPhee moves on to movies: In another case of "reality star makes good," American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee has been cast, along with Wes Bentley, in director Robert Angelo Masciantonio's indie The Storyteller. McPhee plays the assistant to Bentley's out-of-control writer. Branching out into film might be a step in the right direction for McPhee, whose music career hasn't taken off like some other former Idol also-rans, including Clay Aiken and Chris Daughtry.
