Jason Statham certainly has been staying busy lately. He just wrapped up filming on Paul W.S. Anderson's Death Race and a third Transporter movie, he's currently working on a Crank sequel (which, regrettably, is not called Crankier), and The Brazilian Job is finally set to begin production. The latter is not the story of an extreme crotch wax gone horribly wrong, but a long talked-about sequel to 2003's The Italian Job. Lucky they're finally getting on with that; if they'd waited a few more years his character "Handsome Rob" might have had to change his nickname to "Aging Rob." All in all, it's not a bad time to be Jason Statham.
The good news just keeps on coming: Lionsgate just announced that they have acquired domestic and Canadian distribution rights to Transporter 3. Lionsgate's head of Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Jason Constantine, said they're "delighted" with the prospect of adding another movie to the successful Transporter franchise. (He also went on to say it fits right in with other Lionsgate franchises, like Saw, The Punisher, and...Tyler Perry. Sure, I see that. I guess Madea is pretty scary.) Although some early talk about the movie had it slated for an early 2009 release, Lionsgate will release Transporter 3 over the profitable Thanksgiving weekend this year. That means a pretty regular schedule of releases for Statham over the next couple of years, starting with Death Race later this summer.
Good luck's been on Statham's side for a while, though. He could have wound up living a life of crime after hustling black-market merchandise in London. Instead, it eventually helped him to land his first movie role, as "Bacon" in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
