The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier told ComingSoon.net recently that he's eager to do another Marvel comics movie. Everyone wants to see a movie about Wolverine and tons of people are already salivating over the prospect of an Iron Man sequel, but Leterrier said he would try "camping out at the Marvel office to direct anything they want." "Anything"? Marvel has over 5,000 characters at its disposal; if he's thinking about pitching new ideas, he might want to narrow it down.
With that in mind, let's dig around for a few Marvel characters that the casual viewing audience may not have heard of, but who could star in their own film franchises.
Big Bertha: She's a slender supermodel who can gain 600 pounds just like that. (No Tyra Banks jokes here, I promise.) It would be a positive role model for portly tots looking for a hero, and the fast food merchandising tie-ins are a natural.
Gorilla Man: After killing a half-man, half-gorilla creature during a quest for immortality, Ken Hale becomes a creature himself. This film could be a cautionary tale about seeking eternal youth, the plight of endangered gorillas, and flinging poo as a way of life.
Maggott: Sure, Wolverine's claws are cool, but this guy has a sentient digestive system! Plus, real maggots are nature's tiny little wriggling doctors. Your kids will start bringing them home as pets! What's not to love?
Tippy Toe: She's just a squirrel. Not a radioactive giant squirrel, or a woman who was bitten by a mutant squirrel, or even a squirrel who sells insurance. But squirrels are cute. Squirrels have dramatic potential... and stuff. Okay, I admit I like this one just for the name.
Just from these few examples, you can see that the possibilities are practically endless. Perhaps Leterrier should broaden his horizons instead of investing in a pup tent.
