Thomas Jane totally looks like a comic-book character -- square jaw, cleft chin, good-looking -- but should he ever be allowed to play one ever again? I've been told repeatedly that The Punisher was god-awful (I figured it out from the trailers, thanks), and if Jane couldn't see the badness in the script, then his comic book license should be revoked. (To be fair, it looked pretty faithful to the comic book, but there are some Garth Ennis stories that should never be put to film. Most, actually.) Well, now Jane wants to be in another comic book movie, and if I cared more about the character, or had read more than one or two issues of his book, I'd be concerned.
A photo of Jane made-up as Jonah Hex, a DC Comics cowboy character, has surfaced on the Web, and now it's been revealed that it's apparently Jane's bid for the role. A supernatural Western character with no super powers beyond the ability to make people throw up just by looking at them, the horribly scarred Hex is apparently the subject of a film being developed by the creators of Crank and Crank 2. No casting has been announced, but the image was leaked to Film School Rejects by someone inside the studio, apparently impressed or amused by Jane's enthusiasm.
Now, I"ll admit, he looks pretty damn cool. Although, since Jane bears a passing resemblance to Aaron Eckhart, he also looks a lot like a mirror image of (SPOILER ALERT, ESPECIALLY IF YOU CLICK ON THE LINK, AND YOU MAY REGRET IT IF YOU DO IT ANYWAY) Two-Face from this summer's Dark Knight movie, as Topless Robot has pointed out. And while the Rejects make a big deal about how Hex is on a "short list" of comic book characters people want to see made into a movie, it's certainly an even shorter list of fans who actually know about him. Hex has only been around since 1972, and, living in the 1800s as he does, is a peripheral character in the DC Universe at best, which means that his recognition level compared to Green Lantern or the Flash is pretty low. And while it could be an awesome movie, since he occasionally fights zombies, demons and albinos, it could also be another Punisher if done right -- that is to say, wrong.
In other words, Tom, make them let you read the script first.
