Those die-hard chick-flick fans sure to flock to whatever new film is starring Katherine Heigl may want to read a few reviews before they head to the theater. Variety announced today that Heigl is set to produce and star in a film adaptation of Escape, the best-selling memoir of Carolyn Jessop, a woman who helped send polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs to prison. The story of Escape follows the life of Jessop, who at 18 was forced to marry a man 32 years her senior and at age 35 fled the sect with their eight children. Not exactly your usual story about a zany but successful young woman who just can't find the right guy. [Ed's note: And even more of a gamble on Heigl's part in light of the fact that she herself is a non-practicing Mormon -- Lauren]

Heigl recently appeared on EW's lineup of Hollywood's Next A-Listers, where they warned off her current career trajectory by comparing it to Meg Ryan's (in that rom-coms can't sustain you forever). The star of 27 Dresses and Knocked Up look to be entering her Courage Under Fire phase --the film is definitely a big move from her box office comfort zone. While EW is not exactly, well... Variety, Heigl appears to have been paying attention, though I have to say it has got me wondering if she hasn't also been reading the boards.

She seems to be one of those love-her-or-hate-her actresses; the kind where you either have a knee-jerk reaction like "ugh! Her teeth are too long, I hate her," or immediately want to be her best friend. And whether or not you subscribe to the former or latter group, it seems to me the real question here is: Does anyone really want to pay $12 to see a story you could catch on Lifetime three times a week?
