Back when Disney announced that its first foray back into hand-drawn animation would be The Frog Princess, a story about Maddy, a young black girl working for a spoiled white Southern debutant who was helped by a Voodoo priestess fairy godmother to win the heart of a white prince, many of us had the same reaction: "Wha-huh?" Followed fairly immediately with: "I don't know if that's the best idea." It looks like Disney has finally come to the same conclusion. Britain's The Independent is reporting that Disney has trashed everything from the character's name (who some say was too close to sounding like "Mammy") to the villain's race to the title.
I'm happy to report that this is not yet another celebrity-goes-to-rehab/gets-committed story -- just another bulletin from the casting couch. Will Ferrell has been attached to star in upcoming concept comedy 2-Face, a story about a racist man who, after a prank gone wrong, develops a split personality, with his new persona being that of a bleeding-heart liberal. [And not at all a story about a Gotham City District Attorney who is horribly burned by acid. - Zach]
I need to start by saying that I am not an inordinately rabid fan of ABBA, nor am I a musical theater acolyte -- in fact I hate musicals for their campy, over-the-top cheesiness. Needless to say, I did not see Mamma Mia! on Broadway. I went to see an early screening of the film adaptation of said Broadway musical with a fair amount of trepidation. And I was pleasantly surprised by my lack of homicidal feeling once the closing credits rolled.
So how do old franchises that haven't been in the limelight in years but have a new film coming out woo their old audiences back for one more shot at box office success? If you're the studio behind The X-Files, you throw one slam-bang, pretty seriously awesome premiere. 20th Century Fox is hosting what they're calling a Fan Celebration at the world premiere screening of The X-Files: I Want to Believe on July 23rd at Grauman's Chinese Theatre.
Never was there a Moviefile writer happier than I when she found out there was talk around town of Keanu Reeves starring in a movie titled Plastic Man. The jokes rolled out before me like the waves in Point Break. If ever there was a part Keanu Reeves was born to play, it would be... well, actually, it was the part of Theodore Logan from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, but a close second is a character named "Plastic Man." I was ready to hand the man a preemptive Oscar. And then, of course, I did a little research.
I got somethin' ta say. Everyone who wants to cash in on the "quirky nerd comedy" phenomenon that Napoleon Dynamite spawned -- um, four years ago -- needs to stop. As does the inevitable critical comparison that such films engender: "It's Napoleon Dynamite meets Shoa! With a dash of South Pacific!" Know who's not immune to my admonishment? Napoleon Dynamite. Or rather, the new movie Jon Heder is producing and slated to star in, Loudermilk, which is being touted as "Napoleon Dynamite if he had superpowers." Wow. That's original! Why not take two vastly overdone filmic trends and graft one on to the other to ensure that they're double-crappy?
Now that she's conquered TV, movies, amusement parks and a career in country music, Dolly Parton is taking the next logical step in her career. She's appearing in Imax 3-D. Just kidding! Dolly's coming to Broadway! The woman whose Oscar-nominated hit inspired Dario Marinelli's Oscar-winning score for Atonement (figure that one out, folks! Hint: Typewriters) has taken that hit and 19 new tunes and fashioned them into the score for the Broadway musical version of 9 to 5.
The New York Film Festival has selected its opening-night film, the Palme D'Or-winning French film, Entre Les Murs (The Class). Reuters reports that the first French film in two decades to win Cannes' top prize tells a classroom story populated by real-life students and teachers making their acting debuts. It's a strange day when a place as snobby as the NY Film Festival selects a movie from the oft-hated inspirational teacher genre. I'm looking forward to seeing it because I'm a sucker for these movies. I've enjoyed so many over the years. To honor the occasion, here are three good teacher movies and two bad ones.
When Warner Bros. spun the Hollywood Wheel o' Remakes today, it landed on "Video Games." So they hired screenwriter David Hayter, currently bringing his own Hayter-ation to the Watchmen adaptation, to pen the screenplay for the Capcom game, Lost Planet. According to Variety, "The vidgame revolves around an expedition to an ice planet that harbors an energy source with the potential to save mankind." I sure hope this energy source costs less than the $56 the BP gas station mugged me for a few minutes ago. With my luck, the energy source in question will be Soylent Green.
Let us pray. Dear Lord, please forgive me for laughing about this Passion of the Christ screenplay lawsuit. I know it is in sinfully bad taste for me to conjure up images of Mel Gibson as defendant and New Testament writer John as plantiff on Judge David Young, but I cannot help myself. The flesh is weak, but my will power over parody is far weaker. Blog Categories
