Now that she's conquered TV, movies, amusement parks and a career in country music, Dolly Parton is taking the next logical step in her career. She's appearing in Imax 3-D. Just kidding! Dolly's coming to Broadway! The woman whose Oscar-nominated hit inspired Dario Marinelli's Oscar-winning score for Atonement (figure that one out, folks! Hint: Typewriters) has taken that hit and 19 new tunes and fashioned them into the score for the Broadway musical version of 9 to 5.
E! Online says that the show will kick off a seven-week pre-Broadway run at Los Angeles' Ahmanson Theater in September, then open on Broadway on April 23, 2009. The 1980 movie starred Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly as weed-smoking secretaries fed up with the sexual harassment of their boss, Dabney Coleman. No word on whether South Park's Petey the Sexual Harassment Panda will be appearing, but The West Wing's Allison Janney will play the Lily Tomlin role onstage.
And now, for those whose hopes I got up in my opening paragraph, here's a piece of history. Jane Russell, she of the famous 38-DD movie posters for The Outlaw and TV commercials for the 18-hour bra ("What does she do with them the other 6 hours?" 5-year old Odie once asked his Ma) once made a 3-D movie. It was called The French Line, and was notable as the first appearance of Kim Novak and also the closest most people were going to get to, as Bob Hope once said, "the two and only Jane Russell." Back when I could perceive 3-D, I saw this in a theater in Jersey and couldn't believe my eyes. Lest you consider me a dirty old man, you try to work clean when the movie has a tagline that says "See Jane Russell in The French Line! She'll knock BOTH your eyes out!" She got one of mine.
