Variety reports that MGM was, like, vegging out at the mall one day, and this one guy was like, "Oh my gawd, we should, like, so totally remake a bitchin' movie!" And this one other guy was all, like, "Duh, I was totally just thinking the same thing!" Then the first guy was all, "No way! Fer sure?" and the other guy goes, like, "Totally fer sure! Oh my gawd, wouldn't it be way rad if everyone was, like, singing and dancing in it?" and then they were both, like, "Awesome to the max!" And thus the musical remake of 1983's Valley Girl was born.
Well, I may have taken a few artistic liberties with the exact conversation, but the end result is the same. According to the report, Sean Bailey will produce the film through his Idealogy Inc. banner. The project will feature '80s songs and is "based on an idea by Bailey and Idealogy's Matt Smith, who will exec produce." The plan is to keep the original film's story, which was based loosely (very loosely) on Romeo and Juliet.
It's sort of an interesting turn for Bailey, who produced the dark and gritty Gone Baby Gone is at work on the horror thriller, In Dark Woods. Can he pull off a light and fluffy musical about teens in the '80s? Maybe, maybe not. The main thing that concerns me is the potential to reinsert some of Valspeak's catchiest phrases back into mainstream vocabulary.
That could be, like, totally grody.
