Bad Goon Rising

Although it may seem otherwise, not every comic book ever created will get adapted into a film. Sure, a ton of them get optioned, but relatively few will make it to the big screen. For instance, some comics you look at and think, "Wow, this could never be a movie. It's just too good a comic book." Well, Watchmen has blown the doors off of that argument (the fourth behind-the-scenes video certainly helps), and that means that all bets are off. Despite (or because of) being one of the few simultaneously hysterical and beautiful comic books on stands today, Eric Powell's The Goon is getting made into a movie.

The Goon is the abnormal brainchild of Eric Powell, an incredibly talented artist and writer who swings like a three-way pendulum between the the sublime, the hysterical and the obscene. The Goon himself is a crime boss who runs rackets in his partially zombie-infested town, and keeps the zombies at bay even as he and his pint-sized, loudmouthed sidekick collect protection money. Of course, being that the town also contains a giant lizard, car-attacking squids and a man-sized tarantula in a bowler hat, the film will be CGI. (I actually would have liked to see a guy in a giant spider suit hanging around in Norton's Bar.)

But lest you think that The Goon will be a kid-friendly romp like TMNT, keep in mind that A. Beowulf was an incredibly violent movie, B. Powell himself is writing the script and C. director David Fincher is producing. Yeah, that's right -- the director of Fight Club, Zodiac and Se7en. Considering that the Goon comic is all about fistfights, murder and various ways the Seven Deadly Sins can lead to your horrible death, I can't think of a better fit. And while I'm sure voice-casting the film will be ridiculously tough, it'll be easier than casting the role of the Goon, a man-mountain who rarely shows his eyes except to show endless depths of sorrow. If UFC fighter Brock Lesnar could act, we would've been all set.
