It seems Quentin Tarantino wants Brad Pitt to play the lead in his next film, Inglorious Bastards, about a squad of military convicts who are given a chance to clear their records with one last mission. Apparently, getting Pitt is key, because after the disaster that was Grindhouse, the studios want to know the film will be bankable before they give him any money. Right now, readers at four different studios are probably enjoying scenes where hardened soldiers debate popular films and icons of the 1940s as they try to stop a Nazi train to the tune of obscure rock acts.
If Bastards sounds like 1967's The Dirty Dozen, you're right -- that's because it's a remake of a 1977 Italian film called Quel Maledetto Treno Blindato ("That Damned Armored Train"), which was basically a rip-off of Dozen. It was released in the U.S. as Inglorious Bastards, which was the original Italian working title. It's also been released as Hell's Heroes, Deadly Mission, Counterfeit Commandos and G.I. Bro, the last one re-edited to better showcase star Fred "Shaft" Williamson. No lie. But why choose to remake Bastards over Dozen? I'm betting QT loves the film's 1970s sensibilities (Fred effing Williamson!), but I also bet that he'd rather have his remake compared to a bad movie no one's seen than a good one everyone loves. That, and the fact that there's cussing right in the title. You don't even need to go into the theater! Soon, Tarantino will be calling us up and swearing at us in our homes.
