Let's play a guessing game. What movie, if any, will unseat Will Smith's Hancock this weekend? Well, let's look at what's opening and make an educated guess. First up is the sequel to that OTHER superhero movie that's opening in July, Hellboy II. The first one made money, and is something of a cult classic, and (like Dark Knight) Hellboy II reunites its cast with the director of its predecessor. I loved the original film, but this in no way has the same drawing power as Will Smith. Fans of Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo Del Toro will go, as will Hellboy fans, but that's not enough.
Next up, the stars of Norbit have movies coming out at the same time. My doppelganger (and yes, I really do look like him) Cuba Gooding, Jr. stars in Harold, about "a teenager with an early onset of male-pattern baldness [who] befriends his high school's janitor." Please God, let Cuba be playing the balding teenage -- oh crap, he's the janitor. After Radio, Norbit, Dirty, Shadowboxer and this, perhaps Cuba should try making movies with more than one word in the title. I recall Jerry Maguire was a good movie, as was Rat Race. No way this will beat Hancock.
Meanwhile, Norbit himself shows up inside a robotic version of Eddie Murphy in Meet Dave. Never underestimate Ed-DEE or the lure of family-friendly fare, but the film, co-written by a Mystery Science Theater 3000 scribe, is getting reviews that suggest it belongs on that particular show. Reviews don't matter, but will enough people be intrigued by the premise to see it? I was all ready to go until, while eating dinner, I saw a commercial in which Murphy sharpens a pencil shoved up his nose. Dinner ended early.
Last but not least is Journey to the Center of the Earth, which has Brendan Fraser, talking animals, explosions, stunts, a PG rating and, if you're lucky, 3D effects. With Walden Media behind it (and still smarting from the lack of people seeing Prince Caspian), this looks like the one thing that will unseat Hancock, if only because of the theaters running it in 3D. If this flops for Fraser, he still has Mummy 3: The Domination to repair his rep. We'll see if I'm right on Monday.
