BLOGS
For those of you that were around in 1973 and old enough to watch a primetime TV movie, let me firstly offer you my congratulations on finding the internet -- good job, you! Secondly, you'll have to tell me about the ABC telefilm Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, which I've learned has since turned into a cult classic. All joking aside (I'm giving myself until I turn 30 to make ageist remarks--eight more months and you old farts won't hear a PEEP out of me), I probably wouldn't know about the program anyway, because I'm a giant scaredy-cat who can't handle creepy movies. One man who can handle the creep, however, is Guillermo del Toro, who has just signed on to produce a remake of the ABC special for a theatrical release for Miramax.
Del Toro--who I always picture in my head as a matador -- was the creative force behind Pan's Labyrinth and the Hellboy movies and is currently prepping The Hobbit. (The story behind the matador thing, by the way, is that I was bored one day at work and looked up his name on babynames.com and it means, literally "Strong-willed Warrior of the Bull." Ever since then, it doesn't matter if he's at an awards show or someone mentions his name in passing, I see a skinny dude standing there in that whackadoo Princess Leia-bun-like hat and a red cape even though I know in real life he looks more like Peter Griffin.)
For scaredy-cat young'uns like me who need a refresh, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark tells the story of a young girl, sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend, who finds evil creatures living under the stairs. With del Toro's mad creepy creature skills, I'm sure he'll turn that kind of lame-sounding premise into an instant classic that will probably also be nice to look at. You guys will have to tell me all about it.
