Actually, there are like 9 million reasons to trek to Comic-Con, but in this case we were making a pun. Because as they have at the last two SDCCs, Paramount will be releasing a new Star Trek movie teaser poster -- four of them, to be exact, featuring the new Kirk, Spock, Uhura and...Bruce Banner with facial tattoos?
We're not quite sure why Eric Bana's creepy, inked-up villain character warranted inclusion in this Starfleet-symbol-forming quartet, but it may have been for design reasons, since they already had color-coded posters of a red-shirt (Zoe Saldana's Uhura), a blue-shirt (Zachary Quinto's Spock) and a yellow-shirt (Chris Pine's Kirk). Granted, they could have made Kirk a green-shirt and subbed in John Cho's yellow-shirted Sulu, but I'm betting the stylin' green command-tunic-of-power makes a cameo appearance at best in the new, May 2009-release movie. Also, Uhura is great, but I think a "Simon Pegg as Scotty" poster would have done much better on the show floor.
Sadly, this may be the only Star Trek presence at SDCC. To save money, Paramount will not be bringing any major elements of their 2009 films -- including Transformers: Rise of the Fallen and G.I. Joe -- to the show, which seems like the worst idea ever. (Toymaker Hasbro will likely pick up the slack on those two.) It's especially dicey now that Watchmen's trailer has dropped, making the March 2009 superhero film the talk of the town -- not only will their panel be hugely attended (as opposed to Star Trek's nonexistent one), but there will reportedly be a five ton something on display in the main hall. The Owlship, perhaps? I've got three words for that: Screw the Enterprise.
