Hollywood likes to capitalize on dead horses before the flies start to gather -- look no further than the I Love The New Millenium franchise for proof. The fact that producers waited a full four years after Sex and the City went off the air to flip it for the big screen belied an unusual level of restraint, but it seems to have functioned as a protracted cock-tease -- the film was a rampant success that broke all sorts of records in terms of box office gold for a lady-centric movie. And now it seems the folks behind Friends are hoping for a similar fate -- rumors have surfaced once again that a silver screen adaptation is in the works.
Methinks this is a smart move on the Friend honchos' parts -- just enough time has elapsed that peoples' recollections of just how effing annoying that show was -- despite its cultural relevance -- have faded, and now we're all left with rosy remembrances of Ross, Rachel et al. Like an ex-boyfriend whose flaws you forget when you run into him looking all handsome at Whole Foods. Not that that's happened to me. What was I talking about again? Oh right. Friends.
So what do we think? Does anyone still care? Did the suits wait too long to give it the big screen treatment? I'd wager that as long as Maniston manages to stay on the cover of US Weekly with her parade of fresh young man whores, this film might have a shot in hell. But the real question is: will nostalgia-mongers bring back the Rachel 'do in a salute to mid-Nineties kitsch? I shudder to fucking think.
