G.I. Woes

No, I'm not having gastro-intestinal problems. Well, I am, but that's a story for another time. No, by "G.I. Woes," I mean that the G.I. Joe live-action movie, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, is seemingly going down a very strange, woe-begotten path. (And I don't mean the path to pornography that the film's subtitle implies. Apparently, "Arousal of Python" was already taken.)

Some bewildering tidbits about the movie were revealed by screenwriter Stuart Beattie at the G.I. Joe panel at Comic-Con -- here are the ones that have me the most concerned that we're about to have a Transformers-style car wreck on our hands. (And no matter how much money it made, Transformers was indeed a car wreck, both literally and figuratively.)

Duke and the Baroness were once lovers, and almost got married.
While the Baroness' background is somewhat mysterious, this relationship was never established in the cartoon or comics. Duke is an all-American soldier. The Baroness is supposed to be an Eastern European aristocrat who hates American soldiers. Aside from her character having to undergo a complete overhaul for the two to even spend time in the same room together, what does this relationship add to anything? Is it meant to explain why the Baroness becomes evil? ("Dump me, will you?") Is it meant to give Duke some conflict when the two cross paths on the field of battle? ("I know you're a terrorist, but you're also my ex-fiancee!") Either way, ugh.

The G.I. Joes wear "accelerator suits" that allow them to run 50 miles per hour.
Now, I think I know where they're getting these suits from -- the last G.I. Joe cartoon, 2005's Sigma Six, had the team wearing Sigma suits, which enhanced their abilities. But that cartoon only lasted 26 episodes, and both it and the toy line died out shortly thereafter. The original G.I. Joe series, which lasted 140 episodes, was about normal men and women who had the right weapons, vehicles and tools for the job at hand -- none of them had super powers. (Okay, Zartan could turn invisible, and the Cobra-La guys were pretty ridiculously powerful, but that's pretty much it.) The film supposedly will have distinctive vehicles (including this Mole Pod), which were the Joe team's trademark, so why would they need to run anywhere?

Scarlett grew up so fast that she isn't aware of her sexuality, and Ripcord keeps trying to get into her pants, creating a love triangle with Snake Eyes.
...I don't really have a problem with this, I guess. Scarlett was raised by her martial arts-instructor father and three brothers, so she is certainly a bit of a tomboy, and considering that Marlon Wayans is playing Ripcord, it seems like something he would do. I'm curious to see how it plays out. Beattie said that it was "difficult" to show a relationship between Scarlett and Snake Eyes, since Snake Eyes is mute and all (we'll ignore the fact that the comic book was able to do it just fine), so maybe this is his way of showing he cares -- by helping her keep any Wayans brothers in the area at a safe distance.
