Chalk up another Cinderella-style role for Jennifer Lopez, aka "Jenny From the Block." Just the headline from Variety announcing her starring role in The Governess was enough to give me a flashback to another Lopez vehicle, Maid in Manhattan. Sure enough, both movies were penned by the same scribe. Aside from that, though, the stories could not be more different. One movie has her character pretending to be someone she isn't and landing herself a Prince Charming, while the other movie has... her character pretending to be someone she isn't and landing herself a Prince Charming. But one of them takes place in Manhattan and the other doesn't! Probably. Maybe. Well, the titles are different, at any rate.
The Governess is described in the article as a story that "centers on a professional thief who, in order to pull off a major bank heist poses as the nanny to the three unruly children of a wealthy widower." The unsuspecting schmuck has apparently never heard of background checks nor seen another movie about a governess with an assumed identity. Naturally, the Lopez character "starts to fall for the kids and their father" and has to choose between her life of crime and "a chance to start over." Choose the crime, Jenny! Let them both choose the crime! It would at least be a slight twist on the generic rom-com "Cinderella gets her fella" formula.
It was just back in January that Lopez told Harper's Bazaar that she was taking some time off from acting to raise her babies. This is what she decided to come back to work for? Maybe she chose it because it's such familiar territory that she won't need to expend much time or energy memorizing her lines.
