Never was there a Moviefile writer happier than I when she found out there was talk around town of Keanu Reeves starring in a movie titled Plastic Man. The jokes rolled out before me like the waves in Point Break. If ever there was a part Keanu Reeves was born to play, it would be... well, actually, it was the part of Theodore Logan from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, but a close second is a character named "Plastic Man." I was ready to hand the man a preemptive Oscar. And then, of course, I did a little research.
The rumor, started by director/producer Joel Silver, is that the Wachowski Brothers are planning on making a movie about Plastic Man, a comic book character named Patrick "Eel" O'Brien, whom Reeves is attached to play. The character, created in 1941 by Quality Comics and later acquired by DC Comics, has one real power: He can stretch his body into any imaginable form. Already you're seeing the problem. "Plastic Man" is a bit of a misnomer. I mean, since when do rubber and plastic have the same physical properties? That alone ruins all the "Keanu's acting = plastic" jokes that had held such promise. Then again, there is probably a hidden cache of ironic jokes about Reeves playing a character that can stretch into any imaginable form, but my head is totally in the wrong place.
The Wachowskis shopped a script about the character around town back in the '90s, but that was back in the days when the probability of a superhero movie equaling box office success wasn't quite as promising as it is now. In any event, if the Reeves rumor turns out to be true, I'm sure my jokey headline will be the first of many.
